Gary Ness, Ph.D., serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Center for Sport Leadership, where he teaches courses such as Sport Law and Ethics in Sport. Ness received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of New Mexico, where he also competed on the first Western Athletic Conference football championship team in 1963 and the all-conference baseball championship team.
In 1965, Ness became a graduate assistant for the football team at Stanford University, where he later completed his doctorate in Education and Psychology in 1975. He returned to UNM as faculty and became the athletics director in 1988. In 1997, he moved to Virginia and become professor of sports management at Lynchburg College, where he retired in 2003.
Ness is a past president of the Sport and Recreation Law Association, and has been inducted into the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Hall of Honor and into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.
